Rank NI

Case study

#1 across Belfast for a baking business, and the honest story behind it

Two Google Maps geo-grids for Bakes by Vita, a Belfast baking business, ranking it in the top spot across the city for both of its main searches. Here are the scans in full, with the honest story behind them and the bits that aren’t a perfect number one.

The honest bit first

Vita is my wife. I'm not going to bury that in the small print, because the whole point of Rank NI is that I won't oversell you. So read this as a worked example of how the map-pack work is done, by someone who could get full access to the profile and do it properly. It's not a "look at my famous client" testimonial. It's the same method I'd use for a plumber in Bangor or a clinic in Lisburn.

What it isn't: a revenue claim. A geo-grid measures where a business ranks in Google's map pack across an area. It proves visibility, not turnover. Her bookings are her business, not a number for my marketing page. So everything below is about rankings, because that's what the scans actually show.

What a geo-grid is, in plain terms

Google shows different map results depending on exactly where the searcher is standing. A geo-grid checks the ranking from dozens of points across a real area, so you can't hide behind one good result at the front door. Each circle below is one location. The number in it is where Bakes by Vita ranks for that search from that exact spot. 1 is the top of the map pack.

These grids are 7×7: 49 points, one mile apart, spanning roughly six miles from Holywood down to Moneyreagh and from the Falls across to Dundonald. The centre sits near the business's own patch in Castlereagh and Knock. Holding number one across a grid that wide is the hard part; anyone can rank at their own postcode.

Clean sweep

“bespoke cakes”: #1 in all 49 squares

Every point on the grid returns Bakes by Vita in the number-one map-pack spot, from Holywood in the north to Moneyreagh in the south.

Real result

“custom cakes”: #1 across the core, 2–4 at the edges

Number one through central and east Belfast, with a few outer squares (Holywood, Dundonald, Moneyreagh) at 2–4. Shown as scanned: a real result, not a polished one.

Geo-grid scans run in BrightLocal. Ranking position only, not a bookings or turnover figure.

Why I'm showing the imperfect one too

The "bespoke cakes" grid is a clean sweep: number one in all 49 squares. The "custom cakes" grid isn't quite. A few outer squares sit at two, three, even a four in the top corner. I could have shown you only the perfect one. I didn't, because a screenshot where everything is magically number one is exactly what makes people suspicious, and rightly so. This is what real local ranking looks like: dominant where it counts, honest at the edges.

How the result was built

No tricks, and nothing you couldn't check yourself. The grids above are the output of a few unglamorous things done properly:

  • A claimed, verified, fully filled Google Business Profile. Right primary category, every service listed, real photos, accurate hours. Verifying the profile is step one for any trade, and most local businesses get it half-done.
  • The website and the profile pointing at the same place. Consistent name, number and service area, so Google has no reason to doubt who or where the business is.
  • Steady, real Google reviews. Not a burst, a habit. The same review method works whether you sell cakes or fix boilers.
  • Content aimed at how people actually search ("bespoke cakes", "custom cakes"), not how the business describes itself.

What this means for your trade

Bakes by Vita is a baking business, not a plumber or a roofer. But the map pack works the same way for every local trade, which is the whole reason I built Rank NI around it. Whether you're a Belfast plumber or a roofer covering the same storm-damage patch, the method is identical: claim and fix the Google Business Profile, point the website and the local content at the same place, earn the reviews, and Google starts handing you the "near me" searches across your area, not just your own street. That's the work. This is what it looks like when it lands.
